On the off chance that you need a lifelong turnaround, follow these tips from Emily Bennington, creator of Effective Immediately and Who Says Its a Mans World to fix your harmed notoriety and refocus at work. 1. Not exclusively would you be able to establish a decent connection, however getting the chance to work early kills any need to hurry to set yourself up for the afternoon. At the point when you come into a peaceful officeâ€"before your chief, in a perfect worldâ€"youll get an opportunity to get ready for an effective and gainful day. Dont waver to periodically go for a stroll around before anything else so individuals know youre a determined worker and get an encouraging start. (You might be astounded by the impression it leaves.) 2. Record your needs. Anticipate that associates should pass judgment on you dependent on how you act. Bennington says, Run your conduct through this channel on numerous occasions every day. Truly stop and ask yourself, Hows my disposition at the present time?' She likewise proposes asking yourself, Am I demonstrating activity? The five paths to becoming your best at anything

The five ways to turning into your best at anything The five ways to turning into your best at anything I've posted a great deal about becoming the best in your field. Looking back, what are the best techniques for getting there?1. Work 10,000 hoursLet's move the most well known one first: Hard work pays off.Malcolm Gladwell promoted the hypothesis in Outliers: approximately 10,000 hours of intentional practice at something can transform you into an expert.Via Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined:… the most world class musician collected about a similar number of long stretches of conscious practice (around 7,410 hours) by the age of 18 as expert moderately aged violin players having a place with worldwide level symphonies (around 7,336 hours)! By the age of 20, the most cultivated performers assessed they went through more than 10,000 hours in purposeful practice, which is 2,500 and 5,000 hours in excess of two less cultivated gatherings of master artists or 8,000 hours more than beginner piano players of the equivalent age. That stated, 10,000 hours is an average. Furthermore, intention al practice isn't simply experiencing the motions. You've gone through over 10,000 hours driving however that doesn't prepare you for NASCAR or Formula One.Deliberate practice means getting input and continually pushing to improve. It's not flow and it's not fun.But it is what molds champions.(More on how you can turn into an expert here.)2. Have incredible geneticsI won't mislead you: being an individual from the fortunate sperm club positively has its advantages.Via The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance:Even in this period of hyperspecialization in sports, some uncommon people become world-class competitors, and even title holders, in sports from hurrying to paddling with not exactly a year or two of training. As with Gobet's chess players, in all games and aptitudes, the main genuine standard is that there is an enormous characteristic range. There are likewise hereditary points of interest in the region of music, math and writing.Via The Complex ity of Greatness: Beyond Talent or Practice:Heritability coefficients were most grounded in music (.92), math (.87), sports (.85), and composing (.83) of the clarified variance. This is generally cause for some to hurl their arms and give up. (These individuals don't have much grit, mind you.)But the presence of hereditary favorable circumstances doesn't mean you should surrender. I'd pose both of you inquiries: Have you attempted a wide assortment of things to check whether you have hereditary preferences at any of them? Have you taken a stab at adjusting your endeavors to the regions where you show a degree of regular ability? As David Epstein clarifies, the model is not, at this point great at sports or not great at sports - it's which game was your body structured for?Via The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance:But, as Norton and Olds saw, as champ bring home all the glory markets rose, the mid twentieth-century worldview of the solitary, impeccable athletic body blurred for increasingly uncommon and profoundly specific bodies that fit like finches' mouths into their athletic niches. When Norton and Olds plotted the statures and loads of current world-class high jumpers and shot putters, they saw that the competitors had gotten incredibly divergent. The normal tip top shot putter is currently 2.5 inches taller and 130 pounds heavier than the normal worldwide high jumper… Just as the systems are tearing separated, so are the body types required for achievement in a given game dashing ceaselessly from each other toward their individual exceptionally particular and desol ate corners of the athletic physical make-up universe.Tall and slim? Attempt b-ball. Short and thick? Weightlifting. Mother and father are fruitful specialists? Give math a whirl.Taking bit of leeway of hereditary endowments involves finding what your body and brain may have been intended to exceed expectations at and adjusting your endeavors appropriately.(More on hereditary preferences - and how I had my own DNA dissected - here.)3. Be a piece of an incredible teamWorking 10K hours and having normally consistent hands can be an extraordinary bit of leeway to a specialist but surgeons just show signs of improvement at their home hospital. Why? That is the place they realize the group best and create solid working relationships.Via Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success:Overall, the specialists didn't improve with training. They just showed signs of improvement at the specific hospital where they practiced. For each system they dealt with at a given emergency clinic, the danger of patient mortality dropped by 1 percent. Be that as it may, the danger of mortality remained the equivalent at other hospitals. The specialists couldn't take their presentation with them. They weren't showing signs of improvement at performing coronary corridor sidestep unites. They were getting increasingly acquainted with specific medical caretakers and anesthesiologists, finding out about their qualities and shortcomings, propensities and styles.Star experts on Wall Street? Same thing.Via Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success:Even however they should be singular stars, their exhibition wasn't portable. When star examiners moved to an alternate firm, their presentation dropped, and it stayed lower for at any rate five years. What about for craftsmen? No doubt, baby.Via Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success:Frank Lloyd Wright's dry spell went on until he abandoned autonomy and started to work reliantly again with capable collaborators. It wasn't h is own thought: his significant other Olgivanna persuaded him to begin a cooperation for disciples to assist him with his work. When understudies went along with him in 1932, his profitability took off, and he was before long taking a shot at the Fallingwater house, which would be seen by numerous individuals as the best work of engineering in current history.(More on how your companions can make you a superior person here.)4. Be a giverResearchers who hoard the credit on logical papers are less inclined to win a Nobel prize. Those who give more youthful scholastics a touch of the spotlight are bound to have an excursion to Stockholm in their future.Via The Half-existence of Facts: Why Everything We Know Has an Expiration DateOne striking finding was the usefulness of Nobel laureates, or as Zuckerman named it, noblesse oblige. In general, when a logical paper is distributed, the creator who did the most is recorded first. There are special cases to this, and this can differ from field to field, yet Zuckerman accepting it as a valuable guideline of thumb. What she discovered was that Nobel laureates are first creators of various distributions right off the bat in their professions, however rapidly start to give their lesser associates first origin. Also, this occurs far before they get the Nobel Prize… By their forties, Nobel laureates are first creators on just 26 percent of their papers, when contrasted with their less practiced counterparts, who are first creators 56 percent of the time. More pleasant individuals are without a doubt progressively imaginative, increasingly effective, and considerably bound to win Nobel prizes. We consider providers getting misused or strolled on. Furthermore, that certainly happens.Wharton Professor Adam Grant clarified in our interview:What I find across different businesses, and different investigations is the Givers are well on the way to wind up at the bottom. That's principally on the grounds that they wind up placing ot hers first in quite a while that either consume them out, or will permit them to get exploited and abused by Takers. But that is not the finish of the story. If givers resist being saints, or have a hover of matchers who ensure them, they end up on top:Then I took a gander at the opposite finish of the range and said if Givers are at the bottom, who's at the top? All things considered, I was truly amazed to find, it's the Givers once more. The individuals who reliably are searching for approaches to help other people are over-spoken to at the base, yet in addition at the head of most achievement metrics.(More on adjusting pleasant with tough here.)5. Consolidate themOnly got 5,000 hours and quite great genetics? Combining these strategies can give amazing results. You don't have to work unendingly or be brought into the world splendid. There's an extremely basic recipe we would all be able to use to get a profit by this data: Continuously make a solid effort to improve. When picking errands and techniques, think about your characteristic blessings. Pick an extraordinary group and get acquainted with them. Sensibly speaking, consistently help other people. Every single other thing being equivalent, I can't envision how this mix would not prompt an amazing degree of accomplishment. Can you?Join 45K+ readers. The Email Blast Client Alert Is Dead!

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers The Email Blast Client Alert is Dead! Yesterday I posted: Do you have any NEW cheap moves  and promised to share with you additional moves the Spencer Fane Britt & Browne LLP  Labor and Employment Law Group  are making to better serve the firm’s clients and attract new clients. If you are a regular reader you know that I believe blast email alerts are not an effective way to keep clients informed. On the other hand, I believe when a lawyer sends a personal email with the alert, that can be effective. When I met with him last week, I asked David Kight to share with you what his labor and employment law group is doing instead of blast alerts. Guest blogger David Kight Like most law firms, we sent out client alerts from time to time.   The Labor and Employment Group at Spencer Fane was no different.   If there was a major legal decision in our area of law, you can bet that we sent a client alert.   However, we found that our clients were getting several different client alerts on the same case or development.   We found that unless we were first to market on the alert, our alert could (and we suspect did) get lost in the shuffle.   In talking to our clients, we also learned that the alerts may have been interesting to lawyers in our area, they were not practical.   In short, our clients weren’t particularly engaged with our client alerts. So, we went back to the drawing board.   Instead of evaluating whether a development was “client-alert-worthy”, we decided that there were multiple avenues of communicating with our clients.   We began this process as we were cleaning up a mish-mash of blogs that we were bringing to a new platform along with a roll out of a new website.   We dropped the three topic specific blogs for a unified blog.   We then developed several different items: We took a critical review of what we did, how it was received and how we could improve on a client alert.  We went a different way and we are getting great responses.   So, with only a few exceptions, the client alert is dead at our firm.   Our clients will not miss it. Your clients will not miss receiving blast email alerts. Which of Dave’s ideas could you implement? I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

How to Identify and Handle Low Performers - Workology

How to Identify and Handle Low Performers - Workology How Low Performers Affect Morale and the Company’s Bottom Line A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and a company is only as strong as its lowest-performing employees. At first, this analogy may appear to be an overreachâ€"after all, how can one or even a handful of poorly performing workers affect the success of an entire organization? However, according to data from the Eagle Hill National Attrition Survey, low performers can have significantly negative effects on an organization. Below are a few excerpts from the survey respondents: 68% say low performers lower overall workplace morale 44% say low performers increase the work burden on high performers 54% say low performers contribute to a lack of initiative and motivation, resulting in a work culture where mediocrity is accepted Low performers in management roles contribute to attrition among high performers. These workers leave for a variety of reasons, including limited career growth and pay. However, according to Eagle Hills survey, among companies with high turnover rates, 26% of high performers leave because of poor management. And it’s costing companies a pretty penny to replace workers. Eagle Hill reports that replacing a mid-level employee â€" including hiring and training costs, in addition to lost revenue and lost productivity â€" can add up to 150% of that employee’s salary. How Low Performers Affect Morale and the Company’s Bottom Line Low performers undermine the concept of teamwork. According to Autumn Manning, CEO of YouEarnedIt, an employee engagement firm. “So much work today is accomplished through a team, and the really tough problems are the ones that require a creative approach, critical thinking, or a team who has the desire and motivation to work harder and smarter.” However, if one or more members of the team are viewed as free loaders, it can negatively impact the dynamics of the group. “If youve got people ‘mailing it in’ due to a lack of energy or alignment to the mission, youve got performance risk, Manning says. And this counterproductive culture ripples throughout the organization. “Top performers want to work with other top performers,” according to Bill Sanders, managing director of Roebling Strauss, Inc., an operational strategy consultancy in the San Francisco Bay Area. But it’s not just the best workers. “Keeping low performers around directly lowers the moral of everyone else, even average performers,” he warns. Low-performing workers don’t just affect their peers; they also consume a large chunk of their manager’s time. A Robert Half survey conducted a few years ago revealed that some managers spend 17% of their time â€" the equivalent of nearly one day a week â€" managing poor performers. Some companies may tolerate low performers out of a sense of duty or obligation. But Sanders refutes this line of thinking. “Keeping a low performer around isnt doing them any favors something is obviously wrong, and they know it, in fact they usually feel it much more acutely than the employer.” And Sanders adds another reason to address these workers: “It is a direct waste of investment you are paying for a level of service you are not receiving.” Should they stay or should they go? When low performers have been identified, how should they been handled? All of our experts agree that immediately firing them may not be the best solution. Manning believes that leaders owe every employee the opportunity to succeed. “Sometimes, morale is lacking because of a lack of direction or alignment, a lack of feedback, or confusion/fear about the work environment,” Manning says. “Sometimes its a simple lack of clarity around what success looks like, but regardless, we owe employees a chance to perform and engage by delivering these things regularly.” However, if all of these steps have been taken and there are still performance issues, Manning says it may be time to ask if the role is right for the person, and if not, allow them to move on with their dignity intact. The key is to address the issue immediately. Sanders believes that most performance problems are caused by one or more of four broad reasons: (1) situational (2) lack of skill (3) lack of aptitude for a role (4) a poor attitude. “Sometimes you have a formerly high performer who is off their game and when this is the case, I recommend my clients address it head on, find out whats changed in their life, and then offer reasonable support.” Sanders recommends training if the employee lacks the necessary skill(s). When aptitude is the problem, he says the role may not be a good fit, but perhaps the employee would do well in another position. “Great sales people rarely make great sales managers for instance; the skillsets required are different.” If the issue is the employee’s attitude, Sanders says the employee has to address this problem internally. “Point it out, dot your legal Is and cross your HR Ts and let them goâ€"youll be doing everyone involved a favor.” Feedback is an essential part of engaging employees. Lars Sudmann, former CFO of Procter Gamble Belgium, TEDx presenter, leadership and board advisor, and executive coach, believes that companies should provide consistent feedback to all of their employees. “This type of feedback is specific, actionable, from an ‘I’ perspective, and with positive suggestions and coaching.” Sudmann believes that by engaging employees early, on an individual level, and with specific steps that demonstrate improvement, many low performance issues can be resolved. He also extols the virtues of self-leadership. “A key quality and hallmark of high performance cultures is an environment in which everybody is a leader and thoughts, vision, and discussion are promoted.” When leaders routinely ask such questions as, “How do you think this problem should be solved?” Sudmann says they are creating the type of environment that fosters vision and creativity, and drives even low performers to think about ways to solve problems and handle projects. End-to-end ownership is another way that Sudmann says companies can develop a high-performance culture. “If somebody is responsible for a taskâ€"and it should always be one person, not a committeeâ€"then this person will need to own the execution.” So, what does that look like? Sudmann explains, “The person will not stop and say ‘Well, the guys from Marketing didn’t deliver, so whatever’â€"no, if an individual has a task then he or she will completely own it, fight for resources, and push for the completion, regardless of functional barriers or other matters.” Using this approach, Sudmann says one of two things will happen. “Usually, people start to step up their game in such an environment or they will decide to leave.” Sometimes, coaching can help, in fact, sometimes the problem is that managers are not providing coaching or training when they first notice there’s a problem, according to Ram Charan, a business advisor, speaker, and bestselling author whose books have sold more than 4 million copies. However, he says that coaching is only effective when the following conditions have been met: The coaching is relevant to the job at hand and progress is observable The person is eager, willing, and determined to adopt the coaching The boss takes responsibility to supervise that the coaching is working “If it doesnt work, you do the person a great favor by having him or her make their career elsewhere, where they can prosper better, instead of remaining in a role that will eventually have a direct impact on other people’s energy,” Charan says. “If too many such people are in critical leadership jobs, it will impact the bottom line.” Avoiding Low-Performance Hires Is it possible to identify low-performing job candidates before offering them a job? Perhaps, but the Eagle Hill survey suggests an uphill battle: Only 40% of respondents thought their company did a good job of recruiting and hiring high-performing employees. Only 60% said if they had to do it all over again, they would rehire most or all of their employees. Respondents only thought they made a “good hire” 25% of the time However, there are ways to reduce the error rate. Charan believes that a poor match with the job is one of the primary causes of low performance. “We now have algorithms that can cut through the previous history of the person and the interviews to assess the fit between the person and the job, and these algorithms actually have a high percentage of success.” For companies that don’t use these types of algorithms, Charan says that personnel are the first line of defense. “Reference checking is very important; in addition, your interviewers have to be skilled, and should get feedback about the people they recruit and what percentage of them are not meeting the standards.” Charan says this type of feedback will help the interviewers improve their recruiting skills. During the actual interview, look for examples of high performance. “Move as quickly as possible beyond ‘talk’ to concrete, measurable results and actions that individuals have taken,” Sudmann says. Instead of asking hypothetical questions, he recommends trying to identify actual cases that describe how a person approaches a problem or handles a task. “The rationale is ‘How you approach anything is how you approach everything,’ Sudmann says. He warns that candidates may be good at discussing theories, but says that details can provide more information. Cases of true implementation that hold true and have clear identifiable actions can lead to the right direction and can be a great sign of high performance.” This piece was originally published on the Economist Career Blog here. Character reference template

Character reference template by Amber Rolfe Sometimes finding a new role really is a question of character… Character references are great ways for employers to check whether a candidate is a good fit for their organisation, by giving them valuable information about their personality and ethics. But if you’re asked to provide one, what exactly should it include?  We’ve already covered how to get a reference, but here are a few things you need to know about writing a character reference for someone, and a template to help you get started:  Character reference templateWhat is a character reference? A character reference (or personal reference) is a brief assessment of a person provided by someone who knows them outside of work.Instead of talking about your practical skills and abilities in the workplace (as an employer reference would), a character reference uses real-life examples to attest for your personality, behaviour, and general ethics.Who writes a character reference?  Character references can be provided by teachers, lecturers, group/club leaders, mentors, neighbours, or family friends. They should know the person well, be able to speak highly of them, and have up-to-date knowledge of their personality and abilities. However, a character reference shouldn’t be written by a close friend or immediate relative (such as a parent or sibling), as their opinions may be biased.Five personal attributes valued by employersHobbies and interests: Should I include them in my CV?When would I need to give a character reference? Top 5 Tips to Help You Get Over a Bad Breakup - Classy Career Girl

Top 5 Tips to Help You Get Over a Bad Breakup It is not love that should be depicted as blind, but self-love Voltaire When it comes to career satisfaction, our life outside of the workplace can certainly affect our professional life. When a classy career girl’s personal life is on the rocks, it’s natural if the emotions impact daily life at the office. Believe me, I understand when it comes to a breakup. Life can be a roller-coaster following an end to any type of relationship. Sometimes it takes months, sometimes it takes years! So how do you get over a breakup? Self-compassion is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. In fact, you have the control to move the healing process along by not only practicing self-compassion, but also changing the way you think, being present, and having a hopeful outlook. When I go through a rough patch, I found the following 5 tips to be very helpful in the healing process. 1. Treat yourself Often times we forget we need to give to ourselves first for a while. This could be time to enjoy what you love doing or treating yourself to a modest splurge. Remind yourself you deserve to accept these gifts. This may require you need to give less, or to trust your intuition about impulses to say yes to everything. Perhaps you need to give in a different way or to different people. 2. Acceptance Give yourself permission to accept that there are some things you’re not meant to know. During times of difficulties, we may not know the “why” xyz happened as the ambiguity can allow us the opportunity to learn a lesson or change something about ourselves for the better. 3. Take it easy If you need to cry, cry it out. Let yourself feel your emotions. Let go of any labels you may attach to feeling vulnerable. Just feel what you are feeling with awareness. Be with the experience itself moment by moment. 4. Power of being present Trust in your deepest strength of allto be present. Once we shift our focus from the results to the process itself, all situations become opportunities. When we are present, we can welcome all things with an open mind. 5. Hope As you work through any situation, having a hopeful outlook on smaller issues, like the weather on a rainy day, allows you to pay more attention to handling the issues that really matter. For me, I’m not a particular fan of the winters. But I’m hopeful that most winters on the East Coast last only four months and my favorite season comes right after. Last but not least, we can always work together to get through these difficult times through Silver Lined Days personalized care packages. Hire someone to rewrite your resume It worked for me

Hire someone to rewrite your resume It worked for me There came a point in my career when my company went bankrupt, the economy was in the dumps, and my network of friends and acquaintances was getting me nowhere. Like all job hunters, I had good days and bad days. On good days, I brewed coffee for that caffeinated, I-can-overcome-anything feeling. On bad days, I never got out of bed. Finally, after a string of bad days, I called the phone number in a small ad I had come across in a bunch of business publications. The number was for WSA Resumes. I told my contact at WSA that I needed a job. I told him I attribute my career success in part to the fact that I have always been able to write a very effective resume, but I have hit a wall. WSA sold me the executive pack, which was $1000 for someone to rewrite my resume in three days. (They have less expensive packages, but I was in a moment of panic.) I talked to someone for a couple of hours, and she rewrote the resume in a way that smacks of a piece of direct mail: headlines, bullets, italics, and bold lines. The resume did not look like one I had ever seen. My friends said it looked cheesy. They said, Dont send it. But I started to trust the writers at WSA because they noticed patterns and accomplishments in my career that I had not noticed. They phrased achievements in ways that I would not have thought of. They were able to frame my work life in a way that could open new fields to me. But most of all, I wanted to take a risk. I realized that I was getting nowhere and I needed to try something new and this was the only new thing I could think of. To my surprise, my executive package came with a cover letter. It began, If you can use my skills on your management team then Id like to talk to you. I cringed. I told WSA the letter is not my style. There are actually a few more things I told WSA. You know how when youre spending a lot of money you get uppity? Thats how I was. I argued about file formatting, I argued about hyphens and semi-colons. Im sure I argued about more, I just cant remember. Finally, I ran out of things to argue about, and, armed with my new resume, I started my job search again. I found no openings. So I called WSA, and I was hoping they would not remember me the person who argued about everything but they remembered. Yes, we can help, my contact said. They send out resumes cold. Which is, of course, in keeping with their direct mail perspective. So I signed up. It costs $1.50 a resume. My contact recommended sending out 8000 resumes. I wanted 500. He said direct mail is an odds game. I picked 500 companies. Then I changed my mind. Then I picked a new 500. Then I asked for some more lists. I was nervous. The cost worried me, but I took to heart the saying, you have to spend money to make money. Finally WSA printed all 500 cover letters, stuffed envelopes, and slapped on address labels. Everything was ready to go. Then I sent an email to WSA with the subject head: EMERGENCY. I told them that I have a lot of direct mail experience and they should send the letter out on Tuesday, not Friday. WSA dumped me. They tore up my letters and my check. They said I should find someone else to help me. So I took WSAs cover letter and the resume they wrote for me, and I spent a week finding email addresses for CEOs and I sent my resume myself cold to 500 CEOs. And guess what? I got fifteen responses and two job offers. So I recommend that you hire a company like WSA. You will get a standout resume, and you will see yourself differently, so you will summarize your career differently, and you have a new chance at landing a job. And this is the other thing: unless your network is coming up roses for you, job hunting is, really, an exercise in direct mail. Once I admitted that I was not above a direct mail campaign for myself, things started happening. I think WSA hates me, but luckily, I am not proud, so check out their web site: www.wsacorp.com. (Update: WSA no longer exists. But the woman who oversaw my resume overhaul is Elaine Basham, and shes still in the resume business today. Send her an email: elaine@theresumegroup.com.)
